The Auckland ICT Graduate School at The University of Auckland is hosting a ‘Green Futures Hackathon’ from 20 November 2023 – 9 February 2024. As a supporter of this event, the IoT Alliance is calling on its community for anyone who is interested in joining as a mentor or who can assist in the hackathon with a focus on IoT-based solutions. Event Details
Purpose
The final semester of the Master of Information Technology is a compulsory 10-week, full-time project, hosted either by industry or the University of Auckland. Students completing an internship hosted by the university will be given the opportunity to compete in the Green Futures Hackathon.
Theme
Solution-focused thinking to address the challenges we are facing for a sustainable future. The scope of the theme is deliberately broad to allow students to explore solutions for their area of interest which might include but is not limited to:
- Global warming from fossil fuels
- Food waste
- Biodiversity loss
- Plastic pollution
- Deforestation
- Air pollution
- Ocean acidification
- Agriculture
- Food and water insecurity
- Fast fashion and textile waste
- Overfishing

Format
Students will compete in groups of four. The launch of the project will be a one-week hackathon. At the end of the week students will present their concept. Students will spend the remaining nine weeks developing their project.
